Last nite I went to my friends fundraising event in the lower east side. I LOOOVE the lower east side...wish I could live there...there is something that is just so...well, artistic about that area. Anyway, the event was at a place called Lolita, on Broome street, and I had a great time. I met some cool new people, danced, drank a little, danced some more, and are ate lots of popcorn...:)
Its great to see my friends having so much success with their film. I am really inspired by what they do...the party was so cool because they got sponsors for the event and gave out "goody bags" to everyone that attended. Got lots of "girly" stuff like perfume, makeup, magazines, etc...Suhweet!
Daphne Rubin Vega was there- which was very exciting. For those of you who don't know, Daphne was the original Mimi in "Rent".
I am going to be moving two flights up at the end of next month. Fifth floor walk up now. I am afraid that none of my friends will want to come visit me now, the stairs might scare them away, lol. But on a brighter note, I'll be closer to the roof- so maybe I'll have another rooftop party before it gets too cold! And maybe I can start another garden up there...hmm...do mice go up that high?....we shall see...
Its Friday nite people- we made it thru another week!! Bring on the party!!! :)

Ten Things Thursday.
Usually, when someone gives me a book to read, I get thru it pretty quickly. I'm a fast reader, always have been...its just something that I love to do and when I am really into the story, I cant put it down...but this book that we are reading is just so F***g boring!! Its like dragging my feet thru the mud!! I'm not going to name it here because I dont want to discredit the author or ruin it for others who might actually enjoy it- but in my humble opinion this book is a DRAG! Im more than half way thru the book and I keep asking myself- whats the STORY??? What is this book ABOUT??!!! Its got some pretty imagery and insightful ideas but theres no THRULINE...I'm not ROOTING for anyone yet or wondering whats going to happen next....ugh...
Anyway, all that to lead you to todays Ten Things Thursday List..Enjoy!! ;)
TEN BOOKS IN MY ARTISTS LIBRARY THAT I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE TOO!
1) The Artists Way- by Julia Cameron. If you live in NYC and you are an artist, and you HAVENT read this book, you need to stop what you are doing and go get a copy of it. Now. I'm serious. If you have made a commitment to being an artist and you REALLY want to succeed- you need this book. You can borrow mine if you like. Just get a copy of it and start the tasks today. Its a self-help type of book that gives you tools and practices to do every day so that you are constantly making strides towards your artistic goals.
2) Effortless Mastery- by Kenny Werner. You know how sometimes when you "get your pretty on" and go to a party/event and you don't meet any hot guys? And then when you are all gross and sweaty from a gym workout and you are in a tshirt and sweats and your hair is in a bun and you are wearing your glasses, THATS when you get hit on???!! There's a reason for that...its because you are not looking or trying...you are just being yourself...and thats what this book talks about....about how when we stop TRYING to be such a great artist and make all of these grandiose plans for our careers, and just sit back and let the artist within us free to just do what it knows how to do- THATS when we succeed. This is a great book and it comes with a relaxation CD....
3) STORY- by Robert Mckee. More of a book for the writers among us...but even if you are not a writer, its a good read. It really breaks down the process of screenwriting...this is the book that helped me get my screenplay written..(and re-written, and re-written again..) It helps you to develop really strong characters, it helps you know what order to put your scenes in, its got great examples...if you are a writer you should buy this book...
4) A Dream of Passion- by Lee Strasberg. The definitive book on Method Acting... Read it my first year in college and still like to look thru it once in a while for a refresher...
5) The Oxford Shakespeare -The Complete Works....Got this as a birthday present last year...comes in very handy...its big and heavy..so you cant really lug it around the city...but its a great edition with info and tips...
6)The Actors Encyclopedia of Casting Directors: Karen Kondazian. Great resource book. We should all know who does the casting for our favorite shows, and be keeping them up to date about our projects. Also, when you get called in for an audition for a casting director that you dont know yet, you can go to this book and read up on them, what they've done, etc. You will be more informed and prepared when you go into the audition. :)
7) The Screenwriters Legal Guide- by Stephen Breimer. Another birthday present. ..."whats a treatment", "whats an option agreeement", "should I sign a release form", "whats a non-disclosure agreement?"...answers to these questions and more in this book...
8) The Art of Dramatic Writing- by Lajos Egri- BASIC!! If you are a writer...you probably already know this book...
9) True and False- by David Mamet....Another point of view on acting and technique. It contradicts a lot of other techniques like Meisner and the Method....but offers some interesting ideas that are worth exploring as an actor...
10) Seven Keys to Success Without Struggle- by Penelope Brackett.
Written by my coach- who I've worked with for five years now. GREAT BOOK. Here's a teaser for you:
The seven keys are:
1) Declare your goal
2) Make a plan 3) Get a life
4) Provide Excellent Service
5) Seek Support
6) Build Relatiosnhips
7) Maintain Consistency.
Thats all folks!! Have a great day!! :)

Patience is a virtue...we were up for four hours last nite and then another two today working on the trailer...my sister came over to see our work and I feel like I am back at square one. She's the first one to have seen it and she had ALOT of input. We have a lot of changes to make if its going to accomplish what I want it to accomplish, namely to get people hooked on my film so that they can help me get it produced. We are still close to the end, but we are not there yet...almost...I am in awe about how much time, energy, and effort it takes just to complete one three minute trailer...
On a liter note, I gave in to the peer presssure of all my female friends who were raving about Steve Harveys Book on dating. I bought the book and read it, and I thought it was OK. The truth is that most of it was stuff that I already knew. And I actually think that the book has more to offer to MEN than to women. I already know that men should always pick up the check, open doors, show up on time, call when they says they are going to, etc.....its the men that dont know that... And they wonder why you lose interest in them,lol... Anyway, if you are looking for a lite and fun read its worth stopping by your local Barnes and Noble and picking it up. It was really funny and a nice break from the work routine.
This week I am going to a fundraising event that my good friends are having for their film. Tiff is my really good friend who was my first roomate in NYC- we've been friends forever and now she is married and has the cutest little boy! She and her husband have their own film production company. They are really supportive of me and my projects, and I love to support them as well.
Tomorrow I go to see my agent, and I have another editing session scheduled for Friday.
More tomorrow!! Sweet dreams!! :)

Monday
Today I am working a lunch shift, and then tonite I have an editing session with Dunstan for my trailer. I am so happy to be back on board with this again. We had to take a three week "break" because of a technical difficulty..what a pain...anyway, tonite we are back on schedule and hoping to wrap this baby up and get it out to people in the next week or two. Yeah!
I am loving my new work schedule and co-workers. A lot of the them are actors too and I cant wait to go see them in their shows. Being on my feet and constantly in motion keeps me in the present, in the here and now. Often times when I was at a desk, with no heavy workload, my mind would wander and I would fall into "daydreaming" mode. As the expression goes, idleness is the devils breeding ground- when I sit still then it allows room negative thoughts to enter my mind...but when I am constantly in motion- there is no time ro room for that. I am constantly engaged and doing something.
One thing that made me laugh yesterday in Sunday School- the leader asked the kids what they would like him to pray for- one little girl raised her hand and said "Cake!". Then he asked another kid, and he says "Please pray for more cake!".
Im hoping you all have a great Monday, and find a moment to enjoy a piece of cake. :)

And- We're Off!!!
Three shifts down. So far, so good. I'm loving it. I'd forgotten how much I love this type of work. Being on my feet, being constantly busy, teamwork, the social aspect...its also really great to be surrounded by actors again-like being with my "tribe". We all speak the same language. I like my co-workers a lot.
The flexibility in my schedule is also like a breath of fresh air. I am able to get so much more done!
The trailer is about one work session away from being completed. Theres been a "technical difficulty" which has placed the project on hold. I'm trying my best to be patient, but man, its a challenge. I am so eager for this to be done already so that I can start getting it out there. Hopefully by this weekend we'll be done.
Football was great on Saturday! I am really getting the hang of it now! A co-worker at Mad River was breaking it down for me on Friday nite- I asked him a TON of questions, he showed me examples, drew a map, showed me examples. And it really clicked! I also volunteer Ref'd for the game before ours, so I was able to WATCH the entire game and see what they were doing. Also, D gave us "stage directions" during the game- like getting blocking for a play or choreography for a dance piece...I also got to feel firsthand why professional football players wear helmets...someone hit my face really hard and it HURT....o well...
Shakespeare gym starts in two weeks... we're looking at Richard III...cant wait...
I'm off to run errands and do my FIVE THINGS before work tonite... I hope you all have a GREAT day and take some time to enjoy life in the middle of your hectic schedule: feel the fall breeze, have a warm cup of cider, talk to a good friend....

A Leap of Faith
So, today was my last day at the day job. Kind of sad. I really liked it here and I am sad to go. I will miss the people so much- I was so blessed to be led here and I am grateful for the way the way they welcomed me in. This was SUCH a tough decison to make. I am trusting that I made the right one.
I was so touched by everyones well-wishes and support. Although they are sorry to see me go- they know where my heart really is and what I needed to do. I am overwhelemed by all of the good wishes and appreciation and good luck that I have received today. Thank you!

Ten Things Thursday
Ten Things Thursday
Hey Everyone!!! Here you are, My "Ten Things Thursday" List!!
Todays Topics is: Ten Reasons I Love Performing!
Because I love to touch peoples hearts.Because I enjoy the process of collaborating with others and creating something out of nothing.Because I want to make a difference in the world. Have a positive influence.Because I love being on stage. The ritual of theatre is magical and beautiful.Because I have ideas and thoughts that I want to share with the world- and theatre gives me the opportunity to express them.Because every day is different- its not the "same ole same ole every day". I like that I get to work on material for a while and then later move on to another project.. it never gets boring or monotonous.Because I get to constantly meet new and different people from all walks of life.Because acting (and creating in general) has a healing effect on both me and my audience.Because I get to be a role model and/or inspiration for others.Because its fun!!

WHY MEN ARE NEVER DEPRESSED
Thought this was really funny- so I'm sharing it with you all.. enjoy.

Miners
I've been following the story of the trapped miners in Chile from the beginning. I cant even begin to imagine what that experience must have been like for those men. Can you imagine being in a dark, tiny space with over 30 other men for TWO MONTHS?? Just thinking about it gives me chills. I've been stuck in elevators before and I'm always an emotional wreck after that- but that is NOTHING in comparison to what these men have gone thru. I honestly think that even if i had food and water, that the simple feeling of being "trapped" would have been enough to make me lose it. I would have given myself a heart attack. All the oreos in the world couldnt comfort me.
I am so happy that they are finally being freed. I stayed up as late as I could last nite to watch them come up. It was being shown live on TV. I couldnt watch it all but I saw some of it. What strikes me so much about what Ive seen about them is their tranquility and calm. They seem so peaceful as they come out of that capsule. I wonder what is going on in their minds? What are they thinking? And how did they make it thru those two months??!!
I was thinking about this on my walk to work this morning. It certainly made my "issues" seem minor and insignificant in comparison....today I'm just going to keep those men in my thoughts...and every time I get stressed out about something, I'm going to remind myself that as bad as it may seem, I am not trapped in a mine.....

MAGIC
OK- another show down. There were some glitches for sure..actually A LOT went wrong...but alot went right, too. And I'm choosing to focus on the good stuff. Like my friend said, "I got some practice, I enjoyed being on stage, end of story". I also met some great people and developed some really important professional contacts.
Another great thing about it was that on the way back home from the show I rode the train with a magician that I met. The trip was an hour long and he kept me entertained the entire time. There were a lot of impressive tricks that he did, like card tricks and reading my mind. But the one trick he did that BLEW MY MIND was this one where he put a green ball in my hand and closed my fingers around it. He asked me to pick a number between 1 and five- and whatever number I picked- when I opened my hand again there were THAT MANY balls in my hand! He was no where NEAR my hand- so HOW DID HE DO THAT??!! Its driving me crazy! How did one ball magically turn into three balls??!! And of course, no matter how much I pleaded with him to tell me the secret- he wouldnt! Dont worry, I'll figure this out if its the last thing I DO! :)
More later...hope you are all great- doing your FIVE THINGS....

So, tomorrow is the show. I'm excited. Somehow, thru all the craziness, we were able to pull this together. It always amazes me how actors can come together and just create something out of almost nothing. I think thats what I love the most about being an artist- how we can just get a group of us together- shout out some ideas, create an outline, and before you know it- BAM- we have a show! All it takes is a group of energetic, passionate actors, a little bit of time, a willingness to take risks, and the desire to move people in some way.
Elizabeth, the director of the show- is such an amazing woman. Shes the one who was able to sift thru all of the ideas and actually create an arc for the show. She also came up with this really great idea of engaging the audience by inviting them to share their feelings on paper- and having actors read them at various points thruout the show. Paul, who is the one who initiated this whole project- was great about providing tons of information and articles that we could learn from and use as "fuel" for our pieces.
I wrote a personal piece of my own that I will be reading, and there will be slides showing and music playing presented as I read. I'm also going to be reading some pieces written by some great leaders in the environmental activism movement.
This is only the first "incarnation" of this show. We hope to tweek and improve on it and build on this for another, larger scale production. Its been a great journey so far and I cant wait to see what happens next with it!!!
My football team lost today, so morale was a little low. But it was still fun. I am starting to get the hang of it more. Step by step...
Off to Mad River now...have a great Saturday nite everyone!!!! Its great to be alive!! :)

My Performance Tomorrow
Here is some info about the piece I will be performing in tomorrow. It will be broadcast live on the net- and you can watch it by clicking on the link below.
There's a special theatrical performance from the state of New York in the United States that you'll be able to watch over the web. The details:
The show includes a program of actors reading some of the most eloquent and hopeful pieces by some of our best writers and activists on climate change, a youth presentation of the poem “The Lorax Saves the Ocean” by local teen playwright-director Elijah Shaheen and the cast of his play recently produced at the Blueberry Pond, a magician, live music, songs and a number of specially created scenes, monologues and personal statements.
Paul Stark, a one-time student of playwrighting and the founder of LMHV Network, had this to say, “In my own reading on climate change I was finding heartfelt and moving writing on the scientific realities, as well as on the emotional responses others have had in their own self-education. We wanted to create a piece that would take people from the facts of the matter, through the responses possible for ordinary people, to a place of hope for the creation of a saner and more strongly resilient community life.”
You'll be able to see it here :

Ten Things Thursday 10/7/10
So, todays Ten Things will be: Ten Artists I really admire. This is by no means a complete list. Its only ten of the many artists of today that I really admire and look up to. I admire them for their talent, dedication, what they stand for, and their activism. To some extent, theyve all used their positions as celebrities to serve the greater good. They are all intelligent, creative, and passionate people. They embody the qualities that I strive to emulate in my own life and career. Enjoy!!! :)

Cant Stop Wont Stop
Went to see "Cant Stop Wont Stop" at the Cherry Pit Theater last nite. It was part of the Hip Hop Theater Festival that is currently running. Great stuff!! It was a series of short plays (ten minutes each) written in a very short amount of time by some of todays greatest writers: Reg E Gaines, Candido Tirado, and more!! The evening was hosted by a very talented MC. Danny Hoch was in the audience, as well as Kimberly Hughes and so many others!
Got a little sick (OMG- its REALLY OCTOBER- that means I have to actually wear a coat now-lol). I am trying to recover- I'll try to be back for Ten Things Thursday!
Nite guys! :)

The Pitman Painters
Last nite I went to see "The Pitman Painters" at the Manhattan Theatre Club. What an amazing show! I was so lucky because my friend Jim is the House Manager there, so I got to see the show, get a tour of backstage, and meet the cast and crew at the after-party!!
The play centers around a group of men who work as coal miners in England around the 1930's. They are simple, mostly uneducated men who have worked all of their lives as miners. They have no real exposure to art and are pretty ignorant when it comes to the subject. They decide to take an "art appreciation" course, and the teacher is amazed to find that these men know absolutely nothing about the topic! So instead of teaching them art appreciation, where they would analyze and discuss existing paintings, he decides to have them do the painting themselves! And to everyones surprise, their paintings end up being really good. Each of the miners go thru a personal journey of growth and discovery as they experiment with their painting and tried things they never had before. They are forced to think about things and answer questions that had never before crossed their minds.
The play is at times hilarious, touching, and thought provoking. It raises a lot of very interesting questions- such as , "What is the purpose of art?", "what is the relationship between art and politics?", does art have to "mean something", and what makes art "good art"...
The play runs at MTC thru December. I really recommend you go check it out!

Forward Motion
On Wednesday nite I had a production meeting for the 350.org event (10/10/10) that I will be a part of. Lots of good things in the works..its exciting and also a little bit overwhelming..so much to do and not a whole lot of time ...
The people that I am working with are so great! I thought this meeting would take place at someones home, but they actually took me to a really nice restaurant and treated me to dinner. Nice!
I spent the first part of the meeting/dinner just listening to the others. My mind was spinning with all kinds of ideas and thoughts. I should have had a pad and paper with me, but I didnt (mental note for next time!). When they turned to me and asked me for my input, I definitely felt the ghosts of "Shy Jennica" threatening to re-surface. Luckily, I was able to dismiss the ghosts and share my ideas with them. They were all very receptive to my ideas and were so incredibly supportive and encouraging!!
I think that by the end of the meeting we were all pretty much on the same page. We have a shared vision for what we want this piece to look like, and we delegated various tasks to different people. I think that this is going to be a great piece- we will use actors, singers, writers, dancers to bring awareness to the global warming issue. I will be performing an original piece, as well as reading some work written by other people. I am also going to be helping out with the marketing and promotion of the show.
I love doing this sort of thing. Its important to me to not only be a great performer, but to learn the production side of the business as well. That way, I am developing the skills to create more opportunities for myself as well as opportunities for my friends and colleagues.
